Patient Participation Group

Patient Participation Group

An opportunity has arisen for you to influence the future development of healthcare in Bishop’s Waltham.  Our Patient Participation Group (PPG) was formed in 2007 and meets approximately every 2-3 months. It is a diverse group and the chairman is Ian Leesmith, a retired personnel manager who was invited by the partners to take the post when the group was established.

Membership

As of November 2015 there are currently 25 other members with an age range of 30-80, representative of the Citizens Advice Bureau, Councils and Health Professionals and ordinary patients; Dr Susie Wade-West is the partner who attends every meeting and provides the Group with any ‘technical’ input that might be required. Those of us who might be regarded as lay members have learnt much about the NHS and its organisation over the years.

Purpose of the Group

The purpose of the Group is to look at how improvements to the service might be provided and the strategic direction of the practice. It does not look at clinical issues. In addition, the Group will have specific responsibility for conducting Patient Surveys and we shall be looking at how these can be facilitated both in writing and on-line.

Examples of the topics addressed by the PPG and in future to be considered by the PPG:

  • The reception desk and waiting room.
  • The new patient call / display sign to summon patients to the doctor.
  • Extended hours, appointment times and the the number of “Did Not Attend” cases and how these can be reduced.

Future of the Group – we need you

A significant change for the FUTURE is that the PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP can only consist of patients and we need to get a cross section of the Surgery population who can be consulted on various issues. Patient opinions are critical and to that end a new e-mail post box will be established. But for anybody without access to e-mail, they can write to the Chairman of the PPG, c/o The Surgery. At this stage we would like volunteers who are willing to be consulted on Surgery matters – we believe about 120 patients would be a representative sample although we would not propose to contact everybody who volunteers on every issue. However how the PPG would operate in the future would to some extent be up to them.
